MediaForum is pleased to announce the publication of the Media Literacy Directory 2008, launched earlier  today at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.
The Directory profiles a sample of 100 key educators, advocates and stakeholders in the field of media literacy in Ireland today. The first directory of its kind, the initiative celebrates the work of school teachers, community educators, media organisations, governmental agencies and researchers who are working for a media literate Ireland.

The Directory was researched and produced by MediaForum and was grant supported by the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources. Copies are is available by post by request or download in pdf.

Minister Batt O’Keefe in the Department of Education and Science is talking with the main computer manufacturers to consider options on cost effective provision of IT hardware to Irish schools - including a possible lease scheme.

Seán Flynn of the Irish Times covers the story today and Conor McMorrow of the Sunday Tribune wrote about the development (with readers comments) over the weekend.

Create a video for Amnesty about human rights.

It’s the 60th Birthday of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), and to  celebrate  Amnesty are holding a video and animation competition. Amnesty are offering you the  chance to make an animation or video.

The entries will be judged, and there are 15 prizes up for grabs including t-shirts,  DVD’s  and  Amnesty International books, as well as the opportunity to have your work displayed! Winning entries will be shown at an exhibition at Irish Aid on 10th December, the UDHR’s birthday.
What you need to do:

• Your completed video or animation piece should be no more than two minutes long, and should address the question: “What does the Universal Declaration of Human Rights mean to me?”

• Deadline: 21st November 08

• Date of exhibition: 10th December 08

• Venue: Irish Aid, Bishops Square, Redmond Hill

The European Newspaper Publishers’ Association (ENPA) recently agreed (May 2008) to establish a Media Literacy Working Group to work  to play an active role in promoting media literacy and engaging with the European institutions.

The decision to establish the Media Literacy Working Group was taken in response to the EU Commission’s communication of December 2007, in which there was no reference to the role of the written press in enhancing media literacy in the digital age; since media in education is a priority of the forthcoming French Presidency of the European Union and because we believe that ENPA’s engagement could provide added-value to the current work of the newspaper industry in this field.

Youth Filmmaking Competition

The National Museum of Ireland is holding a filmmaking competition for young people aged between 12 and 21. The theme of the competition is: Archaeology, History and Heritage.

The competition is open to groups, classes and individuals. Films must be a maximum of 10 minutes long and delivered on DVD. (more…)

The Department of Education and Science has announced (Friday 20th June, 2008) cut backs in ICT supports to schools.

Seán Flynn reported in Saturday’s Irish Times (sub required) that the cutbacks affect seconded ICT advisors to the 20 full-time Education Centers around the country. A statement by INTO’s John Carr strongly condemns the decision.

The ICT advisors play a significant role in assisting schools and teachers to bring digital media and digital media literacy into the classrooms of Irish schools.

This news comes on the back of suggestions that the National Development Plan’s indicated €252 spend on ICT in school may be in doubt, as reported by Martha Kearns on the 1st of June in the Sunday Business Post, via the Irish Primary Principals Network).
