NEWS: TV3 to take over Channel 6

via IFTN.iechannell 6

Independent Irish broadcaster TV3, owned by private equity firm Doughty Hanson, is set to take over Channel 6 from its founders and a consortium of investors for an undisclosed sum.

Doughty Hanson will acquire Channel 6 in Q3 of this year, subject to BCI approval. The station, launched in 2006, is the only non-subscription domestic digital channel in the Republic of Ireland. Targeted at an affluent under-35 audience, the channel offers a range of drama, comedy and music programming. Acquired programming includes ‘Heroes’, ‘My Name is Earl’, ‘Family Guy’, ‘CSI’, ‘The Sopranos’, ‘Sex and the City’ and ‘Friends’ while local independently produced programmes include ‘Cois Farraige’ and ‘Popscene’. Channel 6 has been available on cable since its launch and on satellite since the beginning of 2007.

“The acquisition of Channel 6 consolidates TV3’s position as Ireland’s leading commercial broadcaster,” said David McRedmond, CEO of TV3.”Channel 6’s programme inventory, distribution and listings provide a fast route to TV3’s stated intention to be a multichannel Irish content provider. We look forward to working closely with the Government and the regulators to ensure a strong, indigenous commercial television sector.”

Blair bites back at ‘feral beast’

could this impact on irish media?

bbc.co.uk have an article on this speech by Tony Blair. There’s a video extract there also.

MediaForum’s question is this; How will this British call for more regulation impact on our current situation regarding the Privacy and Defamation Bills before the Orieachtas, particularly in light of the absence of Michael McDowell as the Minister responsible?

Irish journalism had been looking for defamation reform, without the Privacy Bill (on the basis that the constitutional provisions for privacy protection were adequate enough). We are now getting a Press Council and Press Ombudsman. Would a new Fianna Fail Minister for Justice push through the Privacy Bill also?
