Independent Irish broadcaster TV3, owned by private equity firm Doughty Hanson, is set to take over Channel 6 from its founders and a consortium of investors for an undisclosed sum.
Doughty Hanson will acquire Channel 6 in Q3 of this year, subject to BCI approval. The station, launched in 2006, is the only non-subscription domestic digital channel in the Republic of Ireland. Targeted at an affluent under-35 audience, the channel offers a range of drama, comedy and music programming. Acquired programming includes ‘Heroes’, ‘My Name is Earl’, ‘Family Guy’, ‘CSI’, ‘The Sopranos’, ‘Sex and the City’ and ‘Friends’ while local independently produced programmes include ‘Cois Farraige’ and ‘Popscene’. Channel 6 has been available on cable since its launch and on satellite since the beginning of 2007.
“The acquisition of Channel 6 consolidates TV3’s position as Ireland’s leading commercial broadcaster,” said David McRedmond, CEO of TV3.”Channel 6’s programme inventory, distribution and listings provide a fast route to TV3’s stated intention to be a multichannel Irish content provider. We look forward to working closely with the Government and the regulators to ensure a strong, indigenous commercial television sector.”

With effect from 20th July 2008, the Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2008 has amended some sections of the 1923 Censorship of Films Act and the 1989 Video Recordings Act as follows:
