MediaForum is looking forward to joining the good and the great of media researchers for the annual Irish Media Research Network (IMRN) conference 2008.

We asked the nice people in the IMRN what they thought about the impact digital media is having and will have on media education in Ireland. Lots of thinking and talking, some questioning and querying, and more thinking and talking ensued until it was suggested we could do it proper-style in Maynooth at the start of their conference in September.

So, here’s what we’ve got:

MediaForum is offering an internship position to support our office and project development. We’re looking for the right candidate to join MediaForum’s young and dynamic team in driving forward an exciting plan of work for 2008.
THE POSITION
1. TITLE ‘Office and Project Development Intern’.
2. TERM 10 to 24 weeks.
3. LOCATION Dublin City Centre based.
4. TIME 20 / 30 hours per week – between 9am and 6pm Monday – Friday.

MediaForum’s CEO, Dave Dunn, has received an exclusive Ray Murphy Fund award for Leadership Development.

The award recognises Dave’s position as an emerging leader in the non-profit sector and supports his further leadership growth. MediaForum is using the award to support an intensive one-to-one professional development mentorship scheme with Kevin O’Kelly. Kevin has worked in personal and professional development education and mentoring for 25 years.
The Ray Murphy Fund will make grants to build leadership within the community sector for the next 10 years, 2008-2017. The grants will be for a maximum of €4,00 each and five grants will be awarded per year. The fund is envisaged to assist people managing organisations within the community and voluntary sector access leadership education or training.

The Ray Murphy Fund is run by the Community Foundation for Ireland and honors the memory of Ray Murphy The Mott Foundation, and formerly of Atlantic Philanthropies, to acknowledge the support he gave to both the philanthropic sector and to the Community Foundation itself during his lifetime.

“Ray Murphy was always interested in building strong leadership in the community and voluntary sector. He realised how challenging it was for organisations to raise money for their day to day operations let alone trying to find funding for training or having time for reflection. Therefore, I’m delighted that the board of the Community Foundation are recognising Ray by establishing this fund. The Ray Murphy fund will really contribute to strengthening the community and voluntary sector for many years to come,”
said Tina Roche, CEO, The Community Foundation.

MediaForum was recently profiled on Newstalk’s Change Makers programme (Part 12).

We were out on location with the teachers and students of Griffith Barrack’s Multi Denominational School during one of the classroom session of our pilot Advertising Literacy Course.

Newstalk’s Louise Williams got the opportunity get a classroom experience of the course midway through, as well as meeting the children and their teacher Katie Burke.

We’ve recently achieved charitable status with Revenue, giving us a new number to add to the list - CHY 17984.

In January we published our Annual Report for 2007, showing the work from last year in getting the organisation off the ground.

We’re trucking away on the Media Literacy Education Directory (2008). More about that later.
