Abandoned Audience
The notion of documentary has been radically transformed and the possibilities for self-expression are now endless. Thus, it is time to get the young people involved; to give them a voice and then listen to what they have to say.
In today’s society, reality-based programming is dominating our screens. The notion of ‘documentary’ has been radically altered, as technological developments open up a variety of avenues of production. Documentary is no longer tied to claims of truth and objective reporting. The lines which define this form are becoming increasingly blurred, as it is now being absorbed into forms such as reality television, mock-documentary, web pages, and so on. It is becoming apparent that soon people will possess the tools to create their own movies on their desktops at home. This in turn impacts on the divide between public and private life, as more and more people are being given the opportunity to participate in the public sphere not just through consumption but through production.
