[…] The Mediaforum has launched a new podcast - D’Mediators. The inaugural podcast features an interview with John Horgan, the press ombudsman, as well as a panel discussion with Roger Brownlie (Perfect Bound), Seamus Dooley (Irish Secretary, NUJ) and Paul Drury (Executive Editor, Irish Mail on Sunday) […]
John Horgan, the press ombudsman, clearly doesn’t understand his brief. Despite being told on numerous occasions that he is incorrect in his assertions that:
1. He will arbitrate between a complainant and a newspaper.
This is incorrect. He can only arbitrate between a complainant and a newspaper that has signed up to these press Council guidelines. Many regional newspapers have not been consulted on these arrangements, and have nothing whatsoever to do with them. They have had no input to their arrangements, and the Press Ombudsman and the Press Council have no authority over many publications.
2. That anybody who cannot get satisfaction from a newspaper should go to him.
Not if the newspaper have not signed up to these guidelines.
This man knows, and has agreed that the above is true, but continues to brief incorrectly on his, and the Press Council’s role in media complaints. He blathers on about the accuracy in the media, and its importance, but then cannot get his own basic facts correct. Very disappointing.
